Dog Constipation
Constipation in dogs is generally caused by dehydration. In a constipated dog, water is not present to help feces pass through the large intestine, so they remain in the colon longer than they should, becoming dry and harder to pass. In severe cases, an obstruction of the colon known as obstipation can occur. In this case, a surgical procedure called a colectomy might be required.
Causes of Dog Constipation
The most common cause of constipation in dogs is dehydration, usually as a result of your dog not drinking enough water. However, dehydration of a sort can also occur when water is retained in the colon so that it is not available to help ease the passage of fecal matter through the large intestine.
Another common cause of dog constipation is an obstruction, usually as a result of your pet eating of grass, cloth, bone or some other substance. Other possible obstructions can be caused by tumors or growths in the colon.
Infections and hormonal imbalances that affect metabolism, such as hypothyroidism, can also cause constipation.

Diagnosis of constipation in dogs usually involves a clinical analysis of symptoms followed by a rectal examination. If an obstruction, such as a tumor or defect in the pelvis, is suspected, radiography may also be required. In addition, if constipation is recurrent, your veterinarian might check for a neuromuscular disorder such as hypothyroidism.
Once constipation is definitely established, treatment is relatively simple, and involves rehydration, possibly via an intravenous drip or injection.
